How to Design a Tailor-Made Portfolio

It's not rocket science. You can do this.

  • angle-right
The #1 problem most investors face is choice overload. This course will tackle that head-on.
  • angle-right
The #2 problem is knowing the difference between what's real and what's just a sales pitch.
  • angle-right
The #3 problem is getting organized and staying focused on the things that move you closer to your objectives. This course gives you easy to follow steps.

Stop chasing after shiny objects.
Take control and chart your own course.

The investment industry spends a fortune marketing their latest Shiny Objects. It could be a dazzling new ETF or Mutual Fund. Or maybe a super-duper new trading system that will crush the market. Or maybe a newsletter that touts highly suspicions returns like 500% to 1,000%.

Don't fall for any of it. Learn how to create an investment strategy that fits you like a glove and then design a carefully tailored Portfolio around it. It will be 100% yours. If you do this, the results will surprise you.

Case in point: When I was just starting out in the investment business as an apprentice trader I had a serial run of good luck. The senior traders on the desk took notice, as did my boss. But then I went into a slump. I began seeking stock tips from other traders who had more experience than me.

Long story short, I proceeded to blow up my trading book. I was trying to imitate what others were doing instead of following my own methodology. That was a big mistake, but it wasn't fatal.

I vowed from that point forward to stick to my own ideas and not rely on others to pick stocks for me.

In the end it all comes down to portfolio design.

When I take on a new client I often find that their portfolio is a random collection of stocks, bonds, and other things that don't really work well as a cohesive strategy. It's not their fault because they have been sold a bill of goods that reward the seller, not the investor.

An efficient portfolio is a finely tuned ecosystem of asset classes that complement each other and move the investor towards their stated objectives. Too many investors end up with random junk that doesn't move them forward. I've seen portfolios with 150 individual holdings, and the first thing I do is clean house. Get rid of the junk and the toxic material so they can start fresh and build a proper portfolio.

Random portfolios that have been cobbled together from recommendations by various newsletters, brokers, and friends rarely produce acceptable outcomes. Here's a tip: if you own something that you can't explain to your high school child, then get rid of it.

Portfolio design is where the rubber meets the road.

All of your hard work and careful research will be wasted if your portfolio doesn't fit you.

My darkest hour as a portfolio manager

After a few years on the equity trading desk I was recruited by a hedge fund that was just starting out. As head trader I had all the freedom I needed. I could go long, short, use options and futures - the road before me was wide open, with no speed limits. We started with $5 million in capital and 4 years later we had grown it to $120 million.

Life was good. But then along came the market crash of 1987.

I remember that day like it was yesterday. The 6 of us sat in front of our screens and watched as the market melted down right before our eyes. There was nothing we could do because floor brokers and market specialists refused to pick up the phone. It was a "no-bid" market.

At the end of that infamous day we tallied up our positions and realized that we had actually made a profit. In fact, a huge profit. Remember that we could be short the market, and we were. Our biggest exposure was in bonds, and bonds rallied sharply that day.

Here's the takeaway from that experience: We had designed a portfolio that took advantage of market upside, while also putting in place enough hedging to protect ourselves from a black swan event. It's all about portfolio design.

An Overview of the Course

There is no time wasted in this course. There are 5 Modules and several lessons within each module. We have worked hard to trim the fat and only give you the things you need to design your Tailored Portfolio.

Module 1. Mindset: Getting Your Head Straight.

The course begins by addressing the mental and emotional aspects of the investing game. It's not a game in the traditional sense, but in order to play it well you will have to understand the basic principles of game theory.

Module 2. Building a solid foundation.

In this module we cover the most important principles of efficient portfolio design. There's no hype, no spin, and no fat in this module. There are only the essential concepts you'll need to move forward.

Module 3. Asset Class and Security Selection.

In this module we build on the foundation we established in Module 1. We go through the entire list of 40 different asset classes that are available for purchase. Then we winnow down the list to a number that you feel comfortable managing.

Module 4. Defining your trading rules.

This module addresses the task of getting organized and writing your own trading rules.

When should you buy? When should you sell? When should you become more aggressive?

When should you pull back? It's all covered in this module.

Module 5. Adapting to changing conditions.

There is no such thing as a "permanent" portfolio design. Conditions in the economy, the markets, and the geopolitical realm are constantly changing. In this module we give you a short list of indicators

that will help you to play smart defense.

So many courses and seminars have a disappointing result, but not this one. They delivered everything that was promised and I'm very impressed by that.

Killer DIY Portfolio Course

About the Author

I came up through the trading side of the business. My performance as a trader and later on as a portfolio manager was outstanding, according to the people I reported to. I attracted over $90 Billion of client assets before retiring in 2001 to launch ZenInvestor.

At ZenInvestor I have the freedom to offer services that would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for very wealthy clients, at a price that's affordable to almost anyone.

Still not sure if this course will pay off for you?

I get it. Plunking down a couple hundred bucks isn't something to take lightly. But this may help tamp down your anxiety just a little. Full disclosure - this is the first time I've offered this course to the general public. Prior to today this information was only available to clients who hired me as a personal consultant, coach, and mentor.

Why am I offering this as a low-cost online course when I could charge $2,000 or more for the same information? The answer is simple. It's a matter of scale. I only have 40 hours per week to consult, advise, and coach. As a result of this constraint I can only handle 10 or 12 clients at any one time. By offering this service in an online course format I'm able to reach hundreds of clients who need this information but I haven't been able to give it to them.

Weighing the Pros & Cons

When I'm contemplating a decision like this, I make a list of the Pros and Cons. Below is a short list of each for you to consider. This is not an expensive course but it does call for a commitment on your part to follow through.

You control your investments and save a ton of money in the process. High fees and expenses are a serious drag on performance.

The Cons

  • angle-right
After putting in 4-5 hours of study, there's no assurance that you will be able to master the course material.

If you eliminate the middleman, you'll be taking full responsibility for your decisions. There will be nobody else to blame if things don't go your way.
  • angle-right
Your commitment will be tested whenever the market misbehaves. Are you confident in your convictions?

P.S. This is the early launch of the Tailored DIY Portfolio course. We're pricing it slightly below cost for early adopters because we want feedback from you about the things you like and the things that you don't find very helpful.

After this initial launch we will raise the price to break-even and solicit more feedback from subscribers.

Finally, we will price the course at a level where we can make a reasonable profit that will fund the development of future courses and allow us to continue our financial literacy outreach program in the Greater Chicago Area.

Thank you for subscribing.

I'm ready to get started.
