The Z-Series Defensive Plans

Switch from Buy & Hold to Buy & Defend

Learn how to lower your risk and boost your returns by
harnessing the awesome power of bear markets.

What if I told you that you could earn higher returns on your money without taking more risk? Sounds crazy, I know. But it's true. How does it work?

It's not a secret formula or a black box. It's a simple and straightforward defensive strategy that runs quietly in the background during bull markets, and comes to life during bear markets. It's a risk-reduction overlay to your current strategy.

How do I know that it works?

I know because I've been using this strategy with my clients since 2005. And the proof is in their actual returns, as verified by their brokerage statements.

Instead of suffering through big market declines and waiting for them to be over, wouldn't it be better to make them work for you? That's what the Z-Series Defensive Plans are designed to do.

The idea is simple - by limiting your exposure to the worst parts of bear markets, you get to keep more of the gains you've accumulated during bull markets. Isn't that just common sense?

The results speak for themselves, as you'll see in a moment, but for now let's take a look under the hood and see what drives the Z-Series Defensive Plans.

Z-Series Features

Higher Returns

The Z-Series enhances the returns you are getting with your current strategy. It does not replace what you have. It adds 2% to 5% on top of what you are already earning.

Lower Risk

The Z-Series gets you out of harm's way when a major bear market is under way. This cuts your portfolio risk sharply, adding 2% to 5% to your usual returns.

Always Prepared

The time to prepare for a bear market is not when it's already here, it's before it arrives. With the Z-Series you will always be ready for what's coming.

Calm & Confident

Having a clearly defined strategy will enable you to avoid the emotional turmoil that can lead to big mistakes. Just relax and follow the plan.

Winning by not losing

As I said earlier, this is a strategy that's based on the premise of winning more overall by not losing as much during bear markets. It's really that simple. Let's look at a prime example of how it works.

In 2008 the market crashed by 37%, but the Z-100 defensive plan gave a clear signal to get out of equities near the start of that historic market slide. When the market finally found a bottom in March 2009 the Z-100 gave a buy signal shortly after. The net loss to clients was 6.8% rather than 37%.

Where do the Z-Series get their buy and sell signals?

The Z-Series Defensive Plans get their signals from 3 sources.

1. The U.S. Treasury yield curve. A negative yield curve is a red flag for the economy, and the stock market tends to start sliding 2-10 months before an economic recession hits.

2. My recession warning econometric model. This model includes the yield curve and many other indicators of softness in the economy.

3. My bear market model. This model looks at a number of stock market indicators and produces a probability that a bear market will begin in the next 6-12 months.

Taken together, these indicators provide a powerful forecast for the stock market. The combined signal has an 88% accuracy score since 1957.

Best in class among

systematic trading strategies...

I was skeptical at first, but after I read through the materials and supporting data, I recognized that there was value to this approach. This rules-based strategy is tailor made for people like me who have trouble getting and staying organized.

As a math guy, I'm impressed by the structure...

The structure of this strategy is robust and durable. I'm confident that it will keep delivering as promised. I'm already 18 months in and I'm very pleased so far.

I first discovered the basic framework for the Z-Series Defene Strategy back in 2000, when I was searching for an answer to the following question:

"Why are the returns for the most popular defensive strategy in use today

so lukewarm and inconsistent from one decade to the next?"

The strategy I'm talking about here is the 50 day/200 day Moving Average Crossover. It has several variations, but the concept is a simple one - when the short-term price trend (50 day moving average) crosses below the long-term price trend (200 day moving average), it's a red flag that should be heeded by investors who are not married to a strict buy & hold approach. Sometimes this type of technical formation is called a "death cross."

Going the other way, when the short-term trend crosses above the long-term trend, it's a green flag and investors can begin to move back into a normal risk profile again. This event is often called a "golden cross."

Other variations that are popular are the 1-month/10-month crossover, and the 1-month/12-month crossover. It's a matter of personal preference, because there is no definitive answer to the question of which version is best. That had always bothered me, which is why I undertook the research project - I wanted to find an answer.

Then in 2005 I finally put the pieces of the puzzle together and had my aha moment. According to my research, the reason these variations of moving average crossover strategies don't perform very well is that market conditions are constantly shifting from "risk-on" regimes to "risk-off" regimes. Some variations work well in one regime but not the other, and vice-versa. That's why the results had been great for a while, and then terrible for a while. No consistency.

Another problem was whiplash. The old legacy crossover strategies were prone to long stretches of time where the market couldn't make up its mind about which way it wanted to go. If the market was trading sideways while the 50-day and 200-day moving averages were in close proximity to each other, the result would be a string of days where you were in today and out tomorrow or the next day. Back and forth. In and out. Very frustrating, time consuming, and costly.

The way I solved this and other problems with the legacy strategies was by introducing "confirming" or "dis-confirming" indicators that ran concurrently to the crossover signals. That means you can have the crossover giving a sell signal, but the other indicators not confirming, in which case you wait. Less whiplash.

The net result of my adjustments to the legacy model is that the returns are far superior to a traditional buy & hold approach, and they are far more consistent over time - regardless of the risk regime the market is in.

Quick product review

By this point I'm pretty sure you have a good handle on what this defensive strategy is all about. What follows is a quick review of what we've already learned. If you're pressed for time, you can skip this section.

Z-100

Highest Alpha - More Active.   If you are a hands-on type of investor who doesn't mind tinkering with your portfolio, then this is the version for you. The Z-100 strategy produces the most Alpha because it demands the most attention.

Z-200

Great Alpha - Less Active.  If you don't mind doing portfolio maintenance when it's needed, but you don't want it to take up a lot of your free time, then this version is for you. The Z-200 produces great results with about half the work. That's a pretty attractive combination.

Z-300

Good Alpha - Low Activity.  This version is built for the investor who wants to minimize the time spent on maintenance, while still getting better returns than a traditional buy & hold approach. Z-300 is built to do exactly that.

It was easy to set up, even for a novice like me.

I appreciate the concept that its hard/impossible to time the market in general but it seems even to a novice investor (me) that entering into one of the all-time longest bull markets right now, without considering some type of timing, seems incredibly foolish. Thanks for the great site!

Don't wait for the market to roll over. It's time to prepare.
